The European Commission has renewed the EU approval for the restricted use of the fungicide, carbendazim, for 3.5 years starting June 1st. It has also added fodder beet to the list of crops that may be treated with the active ingredient. The Commission went ahead with the renewal without majority support from EU member states (AgrowNo 614, p 11). Several raised concerns over the ai's hazardous properties, as they had also done at the time of its previous three-year re-registration. The limited approval period, rather than the normal ten years, reflects these concerns, the Commission notes.
