The commercial and defence markets for unmanned systems have traditionally been relatively siloed, with distinct technologies and vehicle types falling under one or the other. However, there has been a notable shift in this split, as traditional manufacturers of military systems look to leverage the proliferation of unmanned platforms in the civilian sector. In the air domain, current commercial operations typically require small aerial vehicles that pose a low risk to the general population. The larger systems more on par with manned applications are reserved for military use, because they are operated in specific airspaces under different rulings, and the risk is calculated in a different way.
