In market areas traditionally dominated by a reliance upon radio wave-based radar, laser imaging detection and ranging and visual detection and ranging technologies are fast becoming alternative tools for end-users seeking to enhance mission effectiveness in defence, security and civil applications. Offering smaller form factors and cost-effective solutions in comparison to radar-based systems, laser imaging detection and ranging (LIDAR) and visual detection and ranging (VIDAR) technologies claim to be capable of reducing the workload of sensor operators and analysts, being particularly suited to mission sets conducted in airborne, ground and maritime environments.
