摘要

The Indian government has reiterated its intention to "contain" the use of pesticides by cotton farmers. While the amount of pesticides used on cotton is slowly declining,it is still the highest of all crops in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture says. The Ministry says it has adopted "need-based" use of pesticides as "the cardinal principle" to guide crop protection practices in India. It is keen for farmers to practice integrated pest management(IPM)encompassing cultural, mechanical and biological methods.Last year, the government urged the pesticide industry to promote IPM as part of a drive to boost the industry's image after bad publicity over pesticide residues(Agrow No 433,p 16).
