German plantings of Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize are expected to double this year.The area is to expand to 2,000 ha,the German environmental protection federation,the BUND,predicts.It attributes the growth largely to biofuel-driven demand for maize.However,the federation warns of an accompanying rising cross-contamination risk among GM and conventional crops.It has urged the Minister of Agriculture,Horst Seehofer,to maintain the proposals for a 150 m buffer zone as part of forthcoming co-existence rules on GM crops (Agrow No 515,p 12).
