Real-world, hands-on experiences have been a cornerstone of agricultural education, even long before experiential learning was a buzzword. As agriculture students and FFAmembers became more removed from the farm, the supervised agricultural experience(SAE) component of agricultural education had to change. In many places, teachers began making these changes on their own, adapting to meet the needs of their students. For a while, it seemed as if teachers were worried about how they were stretching the bounds of SAE. Statements such as, "I allow groups of students to work together and use the school greenhouse for their SAE even though that isn't recognized by National FFA" or "I encourage students to do service-learning activities as an SAE, but I know that's not really allowed" were often heard during in-services and conventions.
