THE South Australian branch of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia sent a clear signal to criminals breaking into pharmacies seeking pseudoephedrine-based products: that it is not worth their risk as pharmacies have been urged not to carry large stocks of pseudoephedrine-based cold and flu preparations.Speaking at a recent media conference with the police, SA Guild president, Ian Todd said: 'We have had 27 robberies from mid-December to the end of January-all after hours with no armed holdups yet. But to prevent the situation from escalating, we want to get the message out to the wider community that pharmacists have been asked to reduce stockholdings and only order pseudoephedrine-based products on an 'as needs' basis. Currently the guidelines are that ordering one week's normal sales volume at a time is ideal'.Mr Todd said he was aware pseudoephedrine products were valuable and he would like to see continued access to them by 'genuine users' and hoped they 'would not be too inconvenienced if pharmacists did reduce their stock holding to an all-time low'.
