The central body of the Italian National Healthcare Service (NHS) is the Ministry of Health, which coordinates the NHS and is responsible for government functions related to health care for Italy's 60 million inhabitants. The Ministry of Health works in collaboration with the governments of the 20 Italian regions, 15 of which operate under a "normal" statute and 5 under a "special" statute. The NHS develops a National Healthcare Plan [Piano Sanitario Nazionale), proposed by the Ministry of Health, which then is put into effect by the government, keeping in mind the proposals made by the individual regions. This 3-year plan indicates the priority areas where work is needed to reduce social inequalities in health care.
