The study was conducted to assess the marine fish preferences and intake pattern of different income groups of inhabitants in Mohammadpur, Dhaka during 1997-1998. A random sampling survey among 200 consumer households was conducted. The residents weredistinguished based on their purchasing capacity. The study revealed that the maximum interviewees preferred fresh water fish (75.25%) rather than marine water fish (24.75%). Low income group (LIG) of people preferred marine fish due to cheaper price while the high income group (HIG) considered the taste of fish as their first preference during fish purchase (72%). The diet recall showed that per capita marine fish consumption was maximum in high income group of people (17.83 g/day ) while the consumption was minimum at low income group of people (2.32 g/day) indicating a large gap of fish consumption between two income groups ( 1 HIG; 8 LIG). Fluctuation of price controlled the fish consumption in all cases.
