摘要

That there is considerable interest in the relationship been trees and art is shown by a recent spate of books and papers that discuss the ways trees are drawn and painted (Carey, 2012; Payne, 2018; Piana et al., 2016; Summerfield et al., 2016; Watkins, 2014; 2018). Although trees feature in many paintings, it is quite unusualfor an artist to depict forestry activities or woodland management. Moreover, in most paintings and drawings, trees with unidentifiable foliage are used as a rather vaguely drawn background or framing device. Indeed, a close examination of most paintingsby professional and amateur artists forces one toagree with the Victorian critic John Ruskin (1843) who argued that "of all objects that defeat and defy the utmost efforts of the painter to approach their beauty, a noble tree is the most inimitable". There are luckily, of course, many exceptions and great artists such as Albrecht Durer, Claude Lorrain, John Constable, Edward Lear and Marianne North have drawn and painted remarkable representations of trees. In this article, I consider some artworks that allow us to learn something of the history of trees and woodland management.
