In three articles we will explore the influences on, and the interaction between, deer populations and woodland management. In particular, how cultural factors and silvicultural decision-making might affect deer dynamics, raise or diminish the level of risk that deer pose to our forestry objectives and steps that we might take to restore the balance.This first article explores the significance of deer in the landscape, and how policy and legislation has framed our approach to their management. The ecological relationship of deer with woodlands and the importance of nutritional drivers are examined.The identification of indicators of deer presence are discussed as a first step towards rationalising the difference between that presence and the perception of impact on our ambitions. The primary geographical focus is England and Wales.
