Graham Tuley describes how the idea arose, his early experiments and investigations of different materials that were used in the development of the tree shelter.In 1976 as a young forester in the Forestry Commission I was transferred from Morayshire to the Silviculture (South) Branch at the Alice Holt Research Station. One of the projects I was given was Rural Arboriculture, which was defined as research on small areas of trees under 0.25ha but excluded trees on motorways, which was a separate research project. I was not involved with reclaiming land after opencast coal mining that also had arboriculture in the title. My first problem was understanding the difference between arboriculture and silviculture.
