摘要

When asked if they can think of a tree disease, many people still mention Dutch elm disease despite the more recent media and public attention commanded by ash dieback. However, although anchored in societal memory, many myths about Dutch elm diseasehave also become embedded and are often repeated. These include the widespread view that the disease originated in the Netherlands, that the clonal nature of the dominant elm species in Britain has led to their demise, and that no more elms remain in Britain - all could not be further from the truth. What is true is that is that Dutch elm disease remains one of the best-known examples of what can happen when a potentially highly invasive and aggressive pathogen is accidentally introduced into a susceptible host population. Over the past century we have learned that there have been two pandemics of Dutch elm disease caused by two entirely separate but related species of fungi, Ophiostoma ulmi and 0. novo-ulmi (Brasier, 1991). These pathogens have killed millions, likely billions, of elms as they havespread throughout elm populations in the Northern Hemisphere.

Novo-Ulmi(Brasier,1991)引起的荷兰榆树病有两种荷兰榆树病。这些病原体已经杀死了数百万,可能的数十亿,因为它们在北半球均为榆树群体。
