Outstanding crystals of diaspore, unquestionably the world's best, occur in a pine-forested area of the Ilbir Mountains in Mugla Province, inland from the coastal city of Akbtik in southwestern Turkey, and about 100 km south of the ruins of the ancient Ionian Greek city of Ephesus. Some early labels say simply "Aydin-Mugla," perhaps because it is very close to the border between those two provinces. Sometimes the locality has been falsely given as "Selcuk," a village just outside of Ephesus.
