摘要

Lack of quality data is a common and serious obstacle to conduct research in developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Taken for a Ride is the result of Matteo Rizzo's remarkable effort made during more than 15 years trying to understand the apparent chaos of the urban transport in Dar es Salaam. A first valuable contribution of Taken for a Ride is that Rizzo successfully brings together the academic world, policy-making and aid implementing practices, a necessary combination that very often proves challenging. Scholars, politicians and sectorial experts do not collaborate as often as it should be. Rizzo brilliantly breaks these silos covering many disciplines and using multiple research methodologies, many of them based on fieldwork and direct personal contact with the actors who are the object of his research. The study ranges from the general theories on urbanisation in developing countries, and how economists attempt to explain the predominance of the informal sector, to the concrete reality of the unskilled transport workers.
