摘要

It was a pleasure to sit down and read this new offering addressing public transportation. The book begins with a discussion of the role of transit in the US then addresses the critical factors associated with the design of public transportation that influence its utilization. The substantial body of the text provides reviews of public transportation in 47 major Metropolitan areas including descriptive information and graphical presentations of their markets and service. The final short section addresses an agenda for moving forward. The book is aptly titled though I would have preferred sequencing the title as people, buses, trains: an opinionated atlas of US transit. Indeed, the book is very customer centric in its focus and approaches public transportation from the perspective of understanding the markets first then addressing how services and transit technologies can be applied. The book is not a traditional academic textbook on public transportation as it is not as comprehensive and rigorous or sufficiently well documented to be a standalone text for public transportation. The target audience is far broader offering the potential to be everything from a coffee table picture book of interest to the casual urban resident to a resource for public transportation stakeholders and decision-makers. It will be added as a supplemental reading for my public transportation graduate civil engineering course. The relatively current system descriptions and urban area reference data will be a handy resource for planning practitioners who are often seeking examples of comparative contexts for the studies they are undertaking.
