The Gongga Mountain, with the highest peak (7556m a.s.l.) in the Hengduan Mountains, is located in the middle andsouth section of the Daxue Mountain (Big Snow Mountain) Rangeand on the southeastern fringe of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Thereare many special characteristics of the mountain ecosystem andenvironment in the Gongga Mountain Region. Representing anintact vertical zonality from the subtropical zone to the frigid zone,characteristics which have been discussed and analyzed include themulti-zone nature of the mountain ecosystems, the diversity of theforest ecosystem types, the intersect of many species of fir andspruce genera, the changes with altitude and regional differences ofproductivity of a particular Abies fabri forest community, andvegetation success in and environment changes in the deglaciationslash of the subalpine dark coniferous forest zone.
