Electronic waste (e-waste), consisting of end-of-life electronic products, is discarded around the world every minute. As an alternative to overfilling landfills or recycling domestically, some industrialized countries have found it more convenient and cheaper to export it to developing countries, such as China and India. Primitive uncontrolled recycling of e-waste by unprotected dismantling, acid stripping, and open burning are now creating a new set of waste problems and leading to the speculation of hot spots for a novel class of contaminants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in these regions. PBDEs, a major class of flame retardants, are structurally similar to poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and theoretically comprise 209 congeners divided into 10 homolog groups (mono- to deca-bromodiphenyl ethers) (1). Three commercial products, commonly referred to as pentaBDE, octaBDE, and decaBDE formulations, are being or have been sold all around the world. Thanks to commercial use of these chemicals, both money and lives are saved, because these chemicals limit the consequences of fire. However, the same as PCBs, PBDEs have become a new class of global, persistent, and toxic contaminants (2). The growing body of evidence shows that PBDEs are ubiquitous in the environment (3, 4).
