摘要

Mirror neurons (MNs) are and have been big news, touted as "shaking up numerous scientific disciplines, shifting the understanding of culture, empathy, philosophy, language, autism, and psychotherapy" (Blakeslee 2006, 2). Popularized as special neurons that internally simulate the sensed environment, MNs have been invoked to explain everything from how we imitate movements (Fogassi et al. 1996; Gallese and Keysers 2001) to how we predict people's future actions (Cisbra 2007; Gallese and Goldman 1998) to how raw emotions can bubble up when we view the face of another person (Carr et al. 2003; Damasio 2003; Rizzolatti and Singaglia 2008; Wicker et al. 2003). MNs have even been hailed as the "basis of human civilization" (Ramachandran 2009). In the words of some early MN researchers, "It is hard to overestimate the importance of this discovery" (Stamenov and Gallese 2002, 2). Lofty claims as these, bordering somewhere between scientific reality and teleological proclamation, energize a wholehearted, thorough, and intense critique of MNs in Gregory Hickok's new book, The Myth of Mirror Neurons:The Real Neuroscience of Communication and Cognition.
