When my physician retired I needed to find a new primary care provider. Rather than go with his recommendation, I decided to shop around. I received several referrals from friends I respected, but most of the offices weren't accepting new patients. The only one that was required submitting to an interview with one of the staff nurses. During the interview I was asked several basic questions about my age, health, and interest in selecting a new physician. At the conclusion of the interview I was told that if I was going to be accepted as a new patient, I would receive a call by the end of the week. The call never came. As a healthy middle-aged man with good insurance, I wondered why I didn't make the cut. Did my reason for seeking a new physician seem suspect? Were they looking for younger people less likely to develop complicated conditions in the near term? Or was my relative good health the problem-making me less likely to generate income? Ultimately, I went with the physician that my retiring provider recommended. There really wasn't much of a choice.
