摘要

Wytham Woods, in about 8 km2, contains three ancient woods, abandoned farmland, modern plantations, remains of a landscape park and of a wood-pasture common, quarries, a deserted village, and shrunken but very significant areas of limestone grassland. It is not wilderness, and bears little resemblance to the Tilia-dominated wildwood of 6000 years ago. Inhabited and cultivated at least since Roman times, it is now more wooded than for a thousand years; and embedded in the woods are remains of fields and of the hedges and hedgerow trees, now Veteran Trees, between them.
