摘要

Wet growing areas loom large on the challenge index—all mud and muck, wait-ing to suck the boots off of unsuspecting travelers and to drown our garden plants. Yet if every cloud has a silver lining then each wet garden area holds gold. Native shrubs designed by nature for less than optimal site conditions are changing the way designers and home gardeners view wet, seasonally flooded or muddy locations. Observing shrubs in their native habitat, we can see that certain plants thrive under these conditions, contrary to what we may think or how we've been taught to deal with the damp. Cultivars bred for heavier fruit set and various sizes increase the ornamental factor, so there is a native shrub for every garden with a problematic wet area. Here are some that have proven themselves in my own design work. (Due to their woodland provenance, all of the shrubs mentioned require acidic soil for best performance.)
