Dobbies founder James Dobbie was born 200 years ago and the group is now the second largest UK garden centre retailer with 34 stores and more than 2,600 staff across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. It is chaired by Andrew Bracey, who bought the chain with his Midlothian Capital Partners group along with Hattington Capital in 2016.Dobbies chief executive Nicholas Marshall has more than 30 years' experience in the garden centre sector. He replaced John Cleland, who took over from Andy King when Tesco sold up. The company last year notched up annual group sales of E153m with E14.5mpre-tax profit.There is a E40m plan to improve turnover at the centres through developing catering, doubling plant sales within three years and working with Ocado on online sales from March 2018. Dobbies wants to attract AB demographic customers back. It will range 25per cent good, 50 per cent better, 25 per cent best products—away from five per cent best and 70 per cent good. There is separate money for acquisitions.
