During February-March, make sure that nutrient levels are analysed in composts as we come out of the winter months. This will help to identify fertiliser requirements for crops sold early in the season and avoid deficiency or toxicity problems prior to dispatch.Many nutritional issues can occur in the previous season from heavy rain, drought, pesticide applications and changes in water quality. For accurate results, take compost and/or tissue samples (depending on the time of year, crop situation and crop type)and send them to a specialist laboratory. Results will only provide a snapshot of the nutrient levels at the time of testing rather than the whole picture but will help to understand nutrient availability through the season. Note any liquid feeding or top dressing carried on the crops when looking at results. Take into account plant species—some genera are more sensitive to fertilisers than others.
