The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa is currently European horticulture's biggest phytosanitary worry, and nowhere more so than in Italy, whose sizeable nursery stock industry, centred on the Tuscan town of Pistoia, is largely dependent on exports—including, substantially, to the UK.Responding to the threat, members of the Italian Nursery Growers Association have signed up to a trial project co-ordinated by regional authorities and in partnership with local research bodies to monitor the health of plants on their nurseries and ensure traceability.
