摘要

As an aUergist/immunologist as well as an integrative medicine practitioner, I just want to offer a caveat. Each day in the United States of America, 5000 people visit emergency departments and 11 people die as a direct result of asthma.1 It is not a diagnosis to be taken lightly. The introduction of new therapies, either pharmaceuticals or natural compounds, requires appropriate follow-up and diligence on the part of the practitioner. It is well-described in the literature that people with asthma often underestimate-with fatal consequences-the severity of their disease, so it is essential that the health care practitioner partner with the patient at the start of any new therapy (conventional or alternative) to agree upon appropriate measures of effectiveness. These include objective measures of pulmonary function and symptoms, and perhaps even rescue medication use. There should also be regular checkups; objective measurements of pulmonary function; and instructions for the patient about how to monitor symptoms and use medications, when to use rescue medication, and when to seek help.
