摘要

Background Modern palliative medicine is a young discipline that has developed its independent profile with specific guiding concepts, goals and values. The history of the subject and the development of a palliative vocabulary can be explored by analysing specialised publications. Methods Based on a text corpus of articles from thejournal Z Palliativmed 2000-2018 (approx. 3.83 million words), key words were identified for four periods (2000-2004; 2005-2009; 2010-2014; 2015-2018). In addition, we carried out a comparative analysis with specialist texts from oncology. Results The development of palliative terminology and culture underwent several distinct phases. Some of the most important guiding values of palliative medicine includes alleviation, dignity, accompaniment, and the involvement of relatives. Professionalization is accomplished through the presentation of medical professionalism and the creation of common institutions. Discussion The analysis of specialised texts leads to a broader understanding of the professionalization of palliative medicine by means of central concepts and vocabulary. Linguistic methods can improve meta-studies and literature reviews.
