New age for Paleogene/Neogene clastics at the northern termination of the Upper Rhine Graben (Hesse, Germany)

This study is about Paleogene/Neogene elastics in the Wetterau at the northern termination of the Upper Rhine Graben (Hesse, Germany). There was common consent that they are comparable in age with the Calcareous Tertiary of the Mainz Basin (uppermost Chattian to Lower Burdigalian). In the southern part of the Wetterau, this assumption is proofed biostratigraphically. In the northern Wetterau, similar elastics are almost fossil-free and dating is very difficult. These elastics belong to the Rockenberg Formation with an assumed age of Lower Chattian to Lower Burdigalian. Especially in the northern Wetterau, there was agreement that they are only of uppermost Chattian to Lower Burdigalian age, locally overlain by Pliocene gravels. Euhedral zircons, detected in a newly recognised altered trachytic tuff intercalated in these gravels, were U-Pb dated. The dating yielded an age of 26.2 ± 0.2 Ma. The zircons show nearly perfect faces with almost no signs of abrasion. This leads to the conclusion, that there was no transport after the sedimentation of volcanic ash in an alluvial environment. Consequently, the gravels are Middle Chattian in age, which is much older than previously thought. The underlying sands may be of uppermost Rupelian to Lower Chattian age, indicated by older Tertiary sediments below them and the sparse fossil record within. They are in that case comparable in age with the Marly Tertiary of the Mainz Basin (Middle Rupelian to Upper Chattian).
