Increased heat extraction capacity of borehole heat exchangers in near-surface salt structures

Salt structures occurring in North Germany quite often show typical positive temperature anomalies in their upper sections and overburden. In addition, salt is characterised by high thermal conductivity compared to the surrounding rock. In the case of near-surface salt structures, shallow to medium depth borehole heat exchangers (BHE) can be installed, utilising the heat content of the salt as an energy source to the heat pumps. A numerical simulation study was performed to compare the energetic efficiency of BHEs installed in salt structures with BHEs in other formations. At borehole depths deeper than 400 m, the heat extraction capacity is, depending on the thickness of the cover and the BHE inlet temperature, 2 to 3 times higher in salt structures compared to other formations. This suggests an interesting potential for the recovery of geothermal energy in salt structures.
