British engineer James Atkinson created his first engine in 1882. The complex crankshaft, conrod, oscillator arrangement gave all four strokes in one revolution of the crank. The design was probably motivated by the need to circumvent the Otto cycle patent on conventional four stroke engines, but the arrangement produced an engine with power and exhaust strokes significantly longer than the induction and compression strokes, leading to improved efficiency.
