Earlier this year, the Golf line-up got a facelift with some useful uplifts in technology, but some were disappointed that the diesel powerplants remained the same as before. That criticism cannot be levelled at the e-Golf, which gains a more powerful 134bhp electric motor that develops 214lb ft of torque - the previous incarnation managed 114bhp and 119lb ft, respectively. Thanks to a larger lithiumion battery, the capacity has increased from 24.2 to 35.8kWh, taking the charging time down to just one hour when using a commercial fast charger, or 45 minutes for an 80 per cent charge. But plug it into the mains using a three-pin socket at home, and it'll take a leisurely 13 hours to recharge fully. Install a home charger, and the e-Golf will be replenished in 4 hours.
