Under the theme 'Securing access to optimal cancer care,' this year's European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) meeting had a typically varied and diverse scientific program, alongside other nonscientific tracks such as patient advocacy and nursing care. Among the variety of clinical and scientific data presented, several highlights were anticipated. Immunotherapy was expected to be strongly evident, with intriguing insights into potential use in new cancer settings and in new treatment paradigms. There were also many and varied presentations on the continued refinement of the use of personalized and targeted oncology treatments, as well as landmark trials and potentially practice-altering data that will impact and improve cancer care.
