The relationship between mangroves and shrimp farms in the Sundarbans, Bangladesh, and the quality of water and sediment in both habitats, were determined. Vegetation in the area includes Heritiera fomes, Xylocarpus mekongensis, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Avicennia officinalis. No significant differences in water and soil profiles between the Sundarbans mangrove and adjacent shrimp farms were observed, although seasonal variations in water quality were observed. Water salinity (0.4-16 ppt) was reported to be almost zero during post-monsoon season, which is an exceptional feature of the water body. In both habitats, available soil nitrogen varied from 0.11-0.22%, indicating nutrient limitation. On the other hand, a high organic matter content in soil was observed, indicating sedimentation of organic materials. The reported yield of Penaeus monodon was 98-190 kg ha-1 during 150 -180 culture days. It is suggested that a proper fertilizer application is needed to enhance productivity in shrimp farms.
