Metabolic rates (MgO2Kg-1h-1) and energy demand (Kjh-1) were determined in the fingerlings (2.8-20.0 g body weights) of 2 strains of Oreochromis niloticus using respiratory methods at 5 salinities (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 p.p.t.) at the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Calabar (Nigeria). Oxygen consumption of the pure strains were similar at all investigated salinities. The diploid strain exhibited differences in respiratory rates at all salinities. Oxygen consumption and energy demand for respiration were different in both strains at similar salinities. The implications of these results for aquaculture are highlighted.
