There is a flood of new artificial intelligence capability being developed for use as part of the Internet of Things and in healthcare diagnosis and treatment. In my view, the knowledge being developed is in no way artificial. It is very real. It is developed using increasingly sophisticated apps and programs. It is becoming self-learning through large-scale, cloud-based systems such as General Electric's PREDIX system and the IBM Watson project. The knowledge is being used by humans to support decision-making. It is also being used to make automatic adjustments to device performance. As the level of sophistication of technology developed knowledge, a real concern may be at what point do the humans in the process "stop thinking." An analogy may be the impact of the industrial revolution on human health. Two centuries ago, most work was done by individuals using rudimentary technology. The work often required hard physical labor. People used muscle power to produce goods and provide services. As the industrial revolution developed machines that did the tasks more quickly and efficiently, the roles of humans changed from being the means of production to supporting the means of production and completing tasks machines could not. An example of this was the early automobile assembly line. The reduced need for muscle power changed the level of physical fitness among the workforce. More and more sophisticated machines have eliminated more and more muscle power jobs. There is some evidence that this has resulted in approximately two-thirds of the US adults considered overweight and 36% considered obese.
