摘要

A technique for the detection and measurement of chatter marks in the surface of ground rolls that offers a number of benefits over existing inspection arrangements to machine operators, roll shop inspectors and problem solvers was described. The principal benefit concerns the provision for a simple, instrumented method for obtaining an objective measurement of the actual depth of any marks in the roll surface, thus eliminating the subjectivity of purely visual inspections. This provides a useful means for determining whether the mill or the roll shop is responsible for chatter marks on the strip. Experience with this technique is also paving the way for the development of a shop-floor instrument for use as an inspection device on a routine basis, with a built-in pass/fail criterion. Also described was how the technique may be used to assist in troubleshooting roll grinder chatter problems, along with how it may be used to help accurately set up and tune installed vibration monitoring systems to maximize their effectiveness.
