摘要

Ethics in nursing has tended to focus on dilemma ethics or what nurse ethicist Patricia Benner refers to as breakdown ethics. Ethics, however, is much broader than dealing with dilemmas or breakdowns in care. It includes who we are to be individually and as groups; what makes a good nurse, in a moral sense; understanding of human relationships; why we undertake to affirm the common good-and what is the common good; how we are to love others; our responsibility as stewards of our bodies, our minds, our environment; whether nursing (as care-of-the-stranger) is a morally praiseworthy endeavor; and large questions such as, "What is the moral identity of nursing?" Early nurse educators and leaders held a broad view of ethics. In nursing's first 100 years, from the 1860s to 1965, approximately 100 textbooks on nursing ethics were published (Fowler, 2016).
