Nunes know that blood is pre-cious and required to sustain life. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the body's cells and waste to be filtered by the kidneys, the body's waste management system. From ancient times, people have understood that the life of any creature is in its blood (Leviticus 17:11). However, blood often is in short supply In 2017, the American Red Cross reported that 36,000 units of red blood cells, 7,000 units of platelets, and 10,000 units of plasma are needed in the U.S. every day (Red Cross, 2017a). The Red Cross collects about 40% of the nation's needed blood supply, whereas remaining blood products are collected by for-profit centers and nonprofit community organizations, such as United Blood Services (2016) and America's Blood Centers (ABC, 2017b). Critical blood supply shortages are reported regularly, especially after major natural disasters (ABC, 2017c). Volunteer blood drives are an effective way to collect blood products and increase local, regional, and national blood supplies. Faith community nurses (FCNs) play a key role in planning, organizing, and running successful faith community blood drives.
