Market demands for high slab surface qualities, defect-free internal structures and optimized core formation led to the installation of a new No. 3 slab caster in the Huckingen Works, Duisburg, Germany. Machine layout is distinguished by a large tundish capacity, compact resonance mold system, length-optimized vertical top part, casting radius of 9.2 meters, dynamic soft-reduction area (realized by the new technology of CyberLink segments), and metallurgical length of 36.4 meters. The machine concept is well-rounded by a dynamic secondary cooling system with spray width control. The new No. 3 slab caster was installed during normal operation of the steel plant, with a tight time schedule of only 15 months from order placement to first cast. Commissioning of the new caster was characterized by a demanding production start-up curve. After three months, approximately 200,000 tonnes per month were produced and the maximum possible casting speeds were attained for the various steel grades, with 3000 heats cast without experiencing a breakout.
