Cosmetic dermatology is an interesting field of medicine that encompasses both surgical and medical skills. It involves the use of surgical instruments to cut and repair the skin for both issues of health and appearance. Equally important are the medical aspects of cosmetic dermatology involving both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) technologies, which may be coupled with surgery or employed alone by the physician. Medical OTC products that do more than simply color or scent the skin fall in the realm of cosmeceuticals, an unregulated and largely undefined category of skin care ingredients in the United States.
