When I began my medical career many years ago, I had intended to become a pediatric cardiologist. I had just completed my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and thought how wonderful it would be to design heart prostheses and study fluid flow in the hearts of infants with congenital heart defects. I had partially worked my way through medical school by functioning as a research associate in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona under the direction of Stanley Goldberg, MD.
