Seasonal abundance of avian diversity in Kotagarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Odisha, Eastern Ghats, India

The seasonal pattern of birds in Kotagarh Wildlife Sanctuary is less explored as compared to diversity studies.To this end, this study aimed at investigating the patterns of diversity related to seasonality of birds in Kotagarh WildlifeSanctuary. A stratified random sampling design was laid across the different habitat during the February 2018 to January2019. In total n = 2319 individuals grouped into 152 bird species were recorded representing 55 families and 110 genera. Of thetotal recorded species, 25 species of birds were winter visitors to the sanctuary. The study revealed highest number of birds i.e.115 species documented in the pre-monsoon season, 91 species in monsoon season followed by 78 species of birds in post-monsoon season in the sanctuary. The species diversity index was calculated using Shannon-Weiner diversity index. Themaximum diversity was observed in pre-monsoon (4.3) and lowest (3.8) in monsoon season. Similarly species richness and indexof bird abundance were highest observed in pre-monsoon followed by monsoon and post-monsoon season. Globally threatenedspecies like Alexandrine parakeet (Psittacula eupatria), Oriental darter (Anhinga melanogaster), Green munia (Amandavaformosa), Greater spotted eagle (Clanga clanga) and Malabar pied hornbill (Anthracoceros coronatus) were also recorded.From the present study it was observed that seasonality and their feeding habit plays an important role in determining thepresence of a species. However, various threats like shifting cultivation, unsustainable manner of NTFP collection, timbersmuggling, maoist activities etc. were observed in process of avian study, which need to be controlled for the conservation ofbiodiversity of the area.
