Despite recent controversies, Italian institutions not only continue to make available loans of archaeological materials and ancient works of art for exhibitions but also do so in spectacular fashion. The National Gallery of Art's Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture Around the Bay of Naples exemplifies such cooperative ventures and includes many works of exceptional quality and great interest. In this exhibition, hese ancient works of art serve to evoke the traditional character of domestic life enjoyed by the old residents and new colonists who populated this region in the first century B.C.E. and first century C.E., as well as the elevated aesthetic tastes of those upper-class members of Roman society whose luxurious country estates, or villas, along the Campanian coastline provided a respite from urban life. Relatively recent archaeological finds, such as the stunning triclinium frescoes from Moregine and the astounding Aphrodite from Rione Terra (Pozzuoli), are joined here with familiar major works, such as the bronze Victorious Youth from Herculaneum's Villa dei Papiri, the berm portrait of Gains Cornelius Rufus and the "daughter" of M. Nonius Balbus from Pompeii, and a host of marvelous examples of silver, as well as lesser-known examples of painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, such as two standing bronze "lampstand" figures, several portraits, and a number of small, detached fresco fragments. All of these, and other works as well, contribute substantially to the exhibition's aesthetic impact and broad appeal (fig. 1).
