摘要

Elizabeth Lyding Will, profes-sor emerita of classics at both the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Amherst College, passed away in Amherst, Massa-chusetts, on 19 August 2009 at the age of 85. A noted specialist with Roman amphoras, Elizabeth Lyding received her B.A. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in classics from Bryn Mawr College. Trained principally as a philolo-gist, she completed a dissertation ("Homeric Enjambement") in 1949 and faithfully taught Latin and Greek throughout her ca-reer. Her main contribution, however, was in Roman amphora studies, a field in which she dem-onstrated keen acumen while pursuing postgraduate research as Thomas Day Seymour Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (1950-1951). While in Athens, Elizabeth Lyding par-ticipated in Homer Thompson's excavations at the Athenian Agora, met her future husband, Samuel Frederic Will, and came under the influence of the noted American amphora specialist Virginia Grace. A pioneer field, Grace brought order to the understanding of Hellenistic amphora production in the Aegean. Her publications have survived the test of time, and her archive of Greek amphora stamps in the Agora museum remains the fundamental reposi-tory for all data of this kind. Will, already trained in Roman history by Lily Ross Taylor and T. Robert S. Broughton at Bryn Mawr, demonstrated deft abilities with Roman amphora research. She processed Roman amphora remains at the Agora excavations, as well as at the excavation by Philippe Bruneau of the Maison des Comediens at Delos. She then devoted her long and productive career to Roman amphora analysis, first in the Aegean anti eventually throughout the Mediter-ranean world.
