摘要

This study assessed whether specialized agricultural mechanization services, as promoted by the Ghanaian government, can be a viable business model at the current stage of mechanization in the country. Although specialized agricultural mechanization service is in theory a profitable investment in the south, in practice numerous constraints hamper profitability. Underutilization as a result of low operational scale appears to be the most important constraint to the profitability of the investment. It is concluded that specialized service provision is not a realistic model that can be operated and sustained by the private sector in Ghana, even with the current subsidy policy. Achieving profitability in tractor-hire services requires either increasing the tractor utilization rate through the migration of service provider across rainfall zones and/or the use of the machines for multiple tasks or the introduction of smaller, low-cost tractors into the Ghanaian market.
