This is a report on the design of an affordable red, green, blue (RGB) color sensor, based on reflective color sensing. It is specifically catered for pathological diagnosis like urinalysis or other colorimetric assays. The proffered gadget is constituted of a light intensity sensor and an RGB LED. Special consideration is given to the geometric position of the light intensity sensor and the RGB LED with respect to the target. This investigation studied three such geometric positions and evaluated their performance on a set of 160 colors. The paper further describes the calibration of the sensor to a standard reference, via apropos regression models. The regression models were then evaluated using 10-fold cross validation. The results of cross validation revealed an optimum geometric position and the cubic spline regression model as the most preferred model for the stated intent. The calibrated color sensor device was then applied to make a strip reader, for the test of urine samples, using the Voronoi method of classification. This paper also discusses the accuracy of the color sensor along with its schematic and circuit diagram.
