摘要

This article deals with the land cover change process experienced in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and its surrounding area. The Cuyabeno Reserve is located in Ecuador's Oriente region, and it represents a very rich area in terms of biodiversity, sheltering one of the most precious tropical ecosystems in the world. The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is currently exposed to great pressures from activities such as petroleum extraction and agricultural colonization. In order to monitor the impact of those phenomena an accurate study on land cover change was conducted based on visual classification of Landsat images, together with field validation. This is the first time that the FAO's Land Cover Classification System was tested in the Amazon area. The study dealt with land cover migrations from the mid 1980s to early 2000s. The review detected a sharp land cover change from 1986 to 2001, especially an acute conversion of forested areas into managed fields. This has led to forest loss and forest degradation both in the neighboring area as well as within the Reserve itself. Change has been essentially observed on the western part of the study area, the one closer to local markets, and it has been more marked during the last five years under review.
