Recent reports in the media highlight the alarming shortage of school nurses across our nation at a time when we are seeing increases in the number of chronically ill children and those with special needs (Cohen, 2006). Many school districts ask school nurses to be responsible for thousands of children, often in widely separated school buildings. Some nurses can only visit each school on a weekly basis and respond to emergencies if called back by teachers or assistive personnel. Cohen cited a comment from the California School Nurses Organization stating that, at any given point hi time, 70% of children have no school nurse on their campus at all.
