摘要

This book reproduces the discussion at an international symposium held in Lancaster in 1992 to critically examine the work of the German sociologist Ulrich Beck and the British social theorist Anthony Giddens on modernity, risk and the culture of environmental issues. A recent essay by Beck opens the collection, and we will emphasize it in this critical book review; Giddens' ideas we must divine from brief hints and short, dense summaries scattered through the collection. Beck afgues that an older industrial society is replaced by an emergent 'risk society'. Hazards produced by industrial society increasingly elude control by its institutions. At first, self-endangerment is not the subject of poltical conflict. But increasingly the institutions of industrial society both produce and legitimate (through 'criticism') hazards they cannot control: society sees and criticizes itself as risk society. Beck refers to this as a process of 'reflexive modernization', reflexive not in the sense of critical reflection, but as self-confrontation with consequences emerging/from an unintentional transition from industrial to risk society that cannot be addressed.
