摘要

When a person with severe mental health issues seeks help, the first provider she or he encounters may be a psychiatric mental health nurse (PMHN). The way in which the nurse acts to minimize barriers to care may determine the future relationship of that client with the provider system. The Hampton, Chafetz, and White study, "Exploring the Impact of Race on Mental Health Service Utilization Among African Americans and Whites With Severe Mental Illness," examined the impact of being of African American ethnicity on mental health service use, specifically admission to emergency, inpatient, or residential facilities, among a group of individuals diagnosed with severe mental illness (SMI).
